About The Postmodern Terminal >_

A terminal is where you type, and it is also where a line ends. I like holding both senses open at once (a Derridean habit I never shook). The Postmodern Terminal is a small-web commonplace book: short posts on theory, method, and the craft of scholarly writing, served over Gemini, with no tracking, no comments section, and nothing that moves on the page.

Who is typing

I am Adam DJ Brett, a scholar of religion (Ph.D., Syracuse University, 2022).

What you will find here

Most posts began as lectures for some of the doctoral seminars I teach. The series so far:

• Why Theory? A toolbox of contemporary lenses, from critical theory and affect theory to ethnoautobiography, cybernetic capitalism, and Yuk Hui on AI.
• Accelerationism, a nine-part field guide to the wager and its thinkers.
• Critical Pedagogy, from Freire and Rancière to hooks and Giroux.
• Craft and Method: embodied wisdom, what counts as best practice, how a scholarly article gets finished.
• Scholarly Postscript: the tools and habits (Zotero, kanban, writing groups) that keep a project moving.

I argue in every post. If a lens does not earn its place, I say so; if a beloved object turns out to be a humbug, that is the reading.

Why the small web

Gemtext allows a heading, a paragraph, a link, a list, and a quote, and nothing else. That constraint is the point. A post here cannot hide behind formatting, so the argument has to carry the line. Read it in Lagrange, Amfora, or any Gemini client, or through a web proxy if you prefer a browser.
